Built in the late-19th Century by Danish sisters bedeviled by the beauty of the Ionian Sea and cliffside village of Taormina, Grand Hotel San Pietro is located 15-minutes from the center of the village connected to town along the Villa Communale. Above the lively pebbled beaches, that so many in the know Italian flock to on an annual basis, the hotel is the only Sicilian location of Relais & Chateaux that it touts on innumerous plaques and stationary. The hotel rises out of a hillside location flanked in marble tiles and Mediterranean foliage with its glass-canopy entryway leading to a cozy lobby lacking in the historical wow-factor of nearby San Domenico or even the Gran Timeo, instead banking on a more modern luxury translated through an on-site eatery and lounge that extend onto a dramatic outdoor courtyard with dramatic views of the extending coastline and breaking waves.The pool deck is one of our favorites in the area, one of the only with a real sea view, perched over the Mediterranean with whimsical parasols above a lackluster collection of metal-and-mesh loungers. Summertime offers complimentary access to a private pebble beach, Lido Caparena, part of the 4-star sister Hotel Caparena and Wellness Club.
The Room
A total of 63 rooms are located within a centralized hotel tower making to most of the properties sea-facing location. Rooms are decorated in a surprisingly conservative scene of shiny hardwood floors, rosy-wood furnishings and oversize lounge furnishings in large suites. All rooms are trimmed in shades of olive green, silver, apricot pink and gold with center beds under wood, upholstered headboards and silky floral bedspreads. Floor-to-ceiling windows, no larger than 8-feet wide, open to small furnished balconies with tables and chairs. Executive suites come with larger balconies or terrace as well as an upgraded decor that's a little less grandma ala 1960. Service is spot-on, a bankable amenity of any Relais & Chateaux property, from housekeeping to room service in no more than 10-minutes.
